“The thick, looped towels that many people associate with Turkish baths were created during the Ottoman Empire. These towels, called havlu, were handwoven using a technique where a second thread was looped across the loom, resulting in a more absorbent and plush fabric. While modern manufacturing has moved toward machine-made textiles, Jennifer’s Hamam in Istanbul is leading the way in preserving the traditional shuttle-loom method. Founded by Canadian expat Jennifer Gaudet, the shop partners with the last remaining master weavers in Türkiye to keep the craft alive.”
